Catch us at the Society for American Music (SAM) national conference!

HISAM’s past and current directors, Stephanie Jensen-Moulton and Agustina Checa (respectively), will be participating in the panel “Potentials and Precarities for American Music Centers and Institutes” (Thursday March 21st, at 2pm). Jeffrey Taylor will be chairing the panel “Recovering Black Musical Histories” (Thursday March 21st at 2pm).

Michelle Yom, current editor of American Music Review, will be presenting a paper entitled: “Yusef Lateef, Roland Wiggins, and Becoming ‘Your Own Theorist'” on the panel “Black Music Institutions and Pedagogies” Saturday March 23rd at 2pm.

Current students from CUNY Graduate Center will also be delivering papers of great relevance to the field. Among them: Audrey Chen will be presenting “Asian and ‘Extraordinary’: Young Concert Artists (YCA) and the Claim to Classical Music” (Thursday March 21st at 10.30 am) on the panel: Musical Institutions and Networks; and Xiaming Tian will be presenting “Beyond Pronunciation: Exploring the Intertwined World of Intonation Contour and Melody in Chinese-American Art Songs” on the panel Transpacific Voices (Saturday March 23rd at 8.30 am).
