On November 4th, 2023, the Elebash Recital Hall at The Graduate Center came alive with the sounds and stories of pioneering Latin American women in electronic music. The event celebrated the launch of the groundbreaking book, Switched On: The Dawn of Electronic Sound by Latin American Women, edited by Luis Alvarado and Alejandra Cárdenas (Ale Hop).
This meticulously researched book is the first of its kind, shining a spotlight on the often-overlooked contributions of Latin American women to the world of electronic music. It challenges the established narrative, predominantly focused on Anglo-American and Western European male figures, by presenting a diverse collection of essays, interviews, and archival materials that highlight the innovative work of these female creators from the 1960s to the 1980s.
The evening featured engaging presentations by the book’s authors, including Natasha Tiniacos, who delved into the work of Venezuelan composer Oksana Linde, and Alma Laprida, who explored the artistic landscape of Argentinian artist Margarita Paksa. A special performance by Alejandra Cárdenas (Ale Hop) added a captivating sonic dimension to the event.
“Switched On” is an essential read for anyone interested in the history of electronic music, the role of women in music, and the rich cultural tapestry of Latin America. It serves as a powerful reminder that the story of music is incomplete without the voices and contributions of all its creators.
Thank you to all presenters and those who came in person and tuned in online!
